  6. The User Description System (UDS) for Fido (tm of Tom Jennings) took many
  7. hours to develop on the part of two programmers. Many features of DOS were
  8. explored and then exploited for the first time (at least by me), including
  9. file sharing and record locking. I'd like to receive some small compensation
  10. for the hours of work that have gone into the UDS. For this reason a
  11. donation of $10 is asked if you use the UDS and find it of value. If you
  12. can't or don't want to send $10, don't worry about it. If there is anything
  13. I *hate* it's "guiltware". Use the program, enjoy it, and pass it on to
  14. others who will similarly enjoy it. If your BBS callers like it, it can
  15. increase the attractiveness of your system in a major fashion, since
  16. Fido doesn't include these functions natively.

  18. Caffeine-Free Software also makes available a small utility for Fido
  19. (and other BBS systems using a FOSSIL for modem communication) called
  20. OFFHOOK. OFFHOOK is available as OFFHOOK.LZH from my system and others.
  21. OFFHOOK fills the need for a program that works with the FOSSIL and will
  22. take a BBS modem offhook so that callers will receive a busy signal
  23. rather than a ring-no-answer. (Fido does not answer the phone during
  24. an IDLE event, and it does not take it offhook. Some callers think that
  25. there is a malfunction on your BBS when they receive a ring-no-answer,
  26. but a busy signal indicates to them that your system is just busy.)
  27. OFFHOOK is absolutely, militantly free of charge. Use it and enjoy!
  28. OFFHOOK is DESQview-aware and uses well-behaved video I/O. No direct
  29. video memory writes!

  32. from my system, 1:204/501. You can also request it by mail on a floppy disk.
  33. If you ask for it by mail, please include return postage and a floppy
  34. disk. If you do not have a floppy disk, please include $1 plus the postage.

  36. 3-inch or 5-inch formats.
